OPC Foundation and LoRa Alliance: Mapping LoRaWAN to OPC UA

The OPC Foundation and the LoRa Alliance announced a significant cooperation at Hannover Messe on 20 April 2026. The two organizations launched a joint working group to map the LoRaWAN protocol to OPC UA, creating a standardized bridge between low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies and industrial interoperability.

LoRaWAN and OPC UA: Complementary Technologies

LoRaWAN excels at long-range, low-power, low-data-rate communication for sensors in hard-to-reach locations, while OPC UA brings standardized information models and security to industrial systems. The integration allows LoRaWAN sensor data to be consumed directly by OPC UA applications.

Expected Benefits

  • Standardized access to LPWAN sensor data in industrial systems
  • Simplified IoT sensor onboarding for factories and infrastructure
  • New use cases in energy monitoring, environmental sensing and asset tracking

This cooperation extends OPC UA's reach into the growing ecosystem of battery-powered, long-range sensors.
